Overall Experience
Golf Course
Without doubt, this is a fantastic links course. It feels different to a standard course when you play here, and it is obvious why the R&A host numerous Open Qualifiers here.
5 tees are in use at this course, from Black (Championship) tees down to blue tees, for the more pleasurable experience. But regardless of which tee you play off; this course provides a unique experience and skill.
Accuracy of the tee is vital. Pot bunkers await as well as very thick and high rough. Putting your ball into either of them could easily add 2/3 shots on ANY hole. If you do find fairways, it makes finding the greens easier but not straightforward, especially in the summer if the ground is very firm.
90% time at West Lancs, windy conditions will have to be negotiated, and like most links courses, provides a big defence for the course.
Playing of White Tees compared to Yellow Tees, makes a huge difference on some holes, particularly on the front nine. Holes 1 and 5 become significantly longer with Hole 5 becoming a Par 5 off the white tees. Tee shots change depending on which tees you choose to play off and course management is crucial.
The condition of the course is simply fabulous. Fairways are pristine and the greens look like snooker tables and run like them too. There aren’t many straight putts at the course but every putt you hit runs true. No doubt that your putting must be at its best to score well.
Facilities
The Practice facilities at the course are of a high standard. In front of the Pro Shop is a fairly large putting green, which runs identical to the greens on the course. Next to the putting green is the chipping area. Again, substantial in size with different areas around the green to chip. Included in the chipping area are 2 pot bunkers to practice out of.
Running alongside the first hole is a 250-yard range area. Balls can be bought at the Pro Shop in amounts of 30. It is something that would be recommended before playing the course as it can allow you to adjust to conditions. One slight negative about the range is, as the Pro Shop closes at 6pm, it can be difficult for members to practice later in the evening. Especially in the summertime.
Hospitality
As an artisan member at the club, I tend to use the Artisan Clubhouse and therefore I have not been in the main clubhouse. However, coming down the 18th hole, you can see the balcony above the practice green. It is high up and can see out over the course, which is a phenomenal view and lots of members are sitting on it whenever they get a chance.
The Pro Shop at West Lancs is a very professional outfit. A lot of clothing on offer with the badge of the club on most of the items. The staff are helpful and will assist you with any problems you may have. Gavin Abson is a PGA professional and offers coaching lessons. There are also two other coaches available at the club too.
Price
Enquiries must be made regarding membership as they are not published on the website, nor are they advertised on the course. Demand for membership is high and at the moment most categories are full.
Green fees in the summer are currently £160 midweek and £180 weekends. Fees are reduced in winter depending on what time of the winter you play at. Despite it being one of the premier courses in the country, this is still overpriced. A lot of courses on this coast (Birkdale, Hillside) tend to overprice their golf course and to the average golfer, those prices are just too high. Most golfers really enjoy playing a 5-star course for either prestige or for the quality but are finding themselves priced out of it more and more.
Experience
West Lancs is up there with the best of them. The course is unbelievably well looked after and is a challenge for any golfer of any standard. Practice facilities are superb and despite it being very pricey to play, it is a course I would recommend any golfer to try and experience.
Who This Course Is For
Final Verdict
Best for: Golfers who want an elite links test with pristine conditions and championship-level challenge.
Also great for: Strong ball-strikers and anyone who loves firm turf, wind, and proper pot-bunker danger.
Not ideal for: Golfers who are price-sensitive on peak-season green fees, or anyone who dislikes very penal rough and bunkers.
West Lancashire is a genuine top-tier links experience: immaculate fairways, greens that roll beautifully true, and a layout that demands accuracy, patience, and smart tee selection. It’s expensive in summer, but as a “bucket list” round, it’s absolutely worth experiencing at least once.
