Golf Course

Playing off the Yellow Tees, the course played slightly more difficult than the slope and rating would suggest. Partly down to the interesting layout of the course and partly down to the interchanging weather. Wind was swirling and rain was on and off during the round, which made it difficult to be comfortable throughout the round. There were some great looking Par 3s from the tee, including the 1st hole which was a daunting tee shot. There was four Par 5’s and a driveable par 4 to finish at just 240 yards

Fairways were quite wide, however if you did veer offline then there were a few ponds and trees to contend with and not many options except to get the ball back into play, however playing well tee to green would allow you to score heavily.

The greens were tricky to decipher. There is no doubt that the greens ran slower than usual due to the weather and because they needed a cut down. There was a little more grass on top than would usually be expected. However, some greens, particularly between holes 7 and 11, were fascinating to work out. The greens were visibly sloped opposite to the natural slope of the course, which made green reading very difficult through those holes.

One problem area of the course was a shared tee box between 3 holes. Holes 4, 13 and 16 all had a tee box located within a few feet of each other. This meant a hold up in play two or three times and as such allowed groups behind to catch up. The tee boxes themselves were in great condition and the course in general was very well signposted.

Facilities

Rossendale offered various practice facilities. There was a putting green, which was located right next to the first tee and the Pro Shop. It was a very small green with only 4 holes on it and with 22 of us in a society, it was very crowded at times. Around the back of the clubhouse were two practice nets which were available for use.  I thought that was all the practice facilities, until I reached the 3rd tee. Next to the tee was a short game area with various flags to aim at and a couple of bunkers. It was a good practice area, however if you have never played at the course before, it was very difficult to know it was there from the car park and the pro shop.

Hospitality

The Pro Shop was kitted out very well. It had pretty much everything a Pro Shop should. Was well stocked and had very friendly staff behind the counter. I must admit I didn’t spend too long there, but I could see that lessons are available there with the head pro.

Of all the different elements of the golf club, the clubhouse was the real gem in the club. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. We were able to use the locker room if we so wished, including the showers.

There was an upstairs balcony which overlooked the 18th hole, which on a better weather day, I’m sure we would have taken full advantage of. Inside the clubhouse was very spacious, and you could get the vibe that it catered for golfers, both members and visitors. There was a big TV with live golf, as well as a comfortable sitting area in one part and table and chairs for food in another part of the room.

The food in the clubhouse was excellent too. We had eaten bacon rolls in the morning before we played and then a 2-course meal in the evening, all of which was of a superb standard.

Price

At no point during my visit did I come across any membership options. I’m sure they have packages available as there was a competition being played in front of our society.

A cost of £45, for all of breakfast, golf and a meal, seemed reasonable and a fair value for money.

Without food, I believe the green fee is around £25, which again I would say is worth the money if playing the course.

Experience

I would certainly go back to Rossendale Golf Club. It’s a picturesque course and full of challenges for the average golfer. However, it certainly isn’t too difficult for the average golfer. The rating is bumped up, due to the standard of the hospitality at the club, but that’s not to say the course isn’t of a good standard. I would recommend the course for any society in the future.

Who This Course Is For

Final Verdict

Best for: Societies and groups who want a friendly club, great food, and a course with variety.

Also great for: Average golfers who like wide fairways but don’t mind hazards and tricky green-reading.

Not ideal for: Golfers who want fast greens and seamless flow, the shared tee box can cause brief hold-ups.

Rossendale is a picturesque course with enough challenge to keep the average golfer engaged without feeling unfair, and the clubhouse hospitality is genuinely standout. The greens and a couple of traffic pinch points stop it being elite, but as a value day out, especially for societies, it’s an easy recommendation.
