Golf Course

Old Padeswood is almost cut into two separate courses. Holes 1-5 and 17 & 18 are so picturesque which include a lot of blind shots. The rest of the course is practically a parkland style of course, but has its challenges, particularly on the back nine.

The four par 5’s on the course can be reachable in 2 for a reasonably long hitter, especially if the wind is in your favour. The par 5 17th is a particular favourite due to its bowl green which cannot be seen until you have hit your second shot. Strategy is key with most of these holes to put yourself in the right position to take advantage and score well. The back nine on the course is slightly trickier due to the various ditches that are in play off the tee and on the fairway.

The condition of the course was good. All aspects of the course are well looked after. From my experience, I felt the greens were a little bit slower than the last time I had played here, but it didn’t detract from the pleasurable round I had on the course. There is no doubt some of the holes are so enjoyable to play and not holes that you come across very often.

One player, who has a handicap of 14 said ‘A good course with a nice variety of holes that challenges all levels of golfer. Several blind shots means you need to be strategic with first and second shots too’.

Facilities

Unfortunately, the practice facilities at the club weren’t of a good standard. The putting green was very bobbly and hardly had any grass on half of it. It in no way reflected the greens out on the course.  There was also a chipping area onto a tiny green with a flag on it. Again, it wasn’t in the best condition and its only purpose really was to get the feel of the club on to the ball. There was also a bunker around the tiny green which wasn’t too bad but looked like it hadn’t been raked in a while. Also, at the practice area were two hitting nets, which is ideal for players wanting to take full swings to warm up. Overall, the fact the club has so many different practice facilities is a massive bonus, however the conditions of these facilities are vital in them being useful for players.

Hospitality

The Pro Shop is almost hidden away in a little tunnel. The tunnel allows you to go from the car park to the 1st tee. The shop is very small for a Pro Shop but is well stocked considering how small it is. There was no advertising for a PGA Professional or any coaching available.

The clubhouse was very accommodating and spacious. Part of our society package on the day was bacon roll before the round and two course meals after the round. Both were done seamlessly by the staff at the club. There is also an outside seating area which overlooks the first and second hole which is a great place to sit after your round especially in good weather. There was also a locker room for visitors, separate from the members, which can be accessed from within the clubhouse.

Price

There were no obvious advertisements for membership at the club. But looking on the website there are several different categories of membership options depending on age. The full membership package for 7 days is £630, which I believe is a great deal for what you get from the course. Compared to other courses, I would suggest this is cheaper than most clubs of this standard.

Green fees are at £25 on a weekday and £28 on a weekend, which again I would say is reasonable for this standard of club considering how many nice-looking holes this course has.

Our society rate was £40 for a round, two course meal and a breakfast bap. Again, this is excellent value for money as the food was excellent and the clubhouse was a pleasant place to be.

Experience

Old Padeswood is a nice course. It’s not one of the premier courses but is challenging for the average golfer with a lot of great looking holes. It’s certainly a club you can stop at after your round too. Unfortunately, the current condition of the practice area is the only real big negative and as a result drags down its rating. However, there is potential for that and should not put you off visiting the course.

Who This Course Is For

Final Verdict

Best for: Golfers who enjoy variety and strategy, especially on par 5s and blind-shot holes.

Also great for: Societies and groups who want strong value with good food and a comfortable clubhouse.

Not ideal for: Anyone who prioritises quality practice facilities or wants a true warm-up area that reflects course greens.

Old Padeswood is a good-value, enjoyable course with several genuinely memorable holes and a welcoming clubhouse experience, especially for society days. The only major downside is the current state of the practice area, which drags the overall rating down, but it shouldn’t put you off visiting if you’re coming mainly for the round itself.
