Golf Course
Harwood was certainly an interesting course. Because it was a society day, it meant we played off the yellow tees. Looking at the scorecard it plays as a short course and predominantly it is a short course, however being situated in Bolton means one thing. Hills!!!
There was a mixture of holes, with 3 par 5’s and a 4 par 3’s and a number of short par 4’s in between. The course was very hilly, particularly the front 9. Tee shots had to be placed in certain positions to stop running off the fairways and in particular the greens were hard to read. The layout of the course was good, a lot of challenging stances and technical shots had to be played. There were a lot of bunkers on the course to protect its length. That, along with the greens made approach shots more difficult and club selection was important to find the green.
The condition of the course was fairly good. The fairways were in great condition and considering the hot weather, they had kept their colour very well. Tee boxes had been cut and a great feature on this course was a sign on every hole, with a picture of each hole and how they were shaped. This proved to be very handy, especially for players who were playing there for the first time. A slight negative was the greens. They were very tricky to read with the varying slopes, but the main problem was the speed. They needed a cut. They were quite slow in parts, and it made lag putting in particular very difficult. Whilst I understand the need to keep them longer than standard due to the slopes, they simply needed cutting a bit more. Across the whole society, the main gripe was the speed of the greens.
A 18 handicap player who scored 37 points said ‘A great visual course and a difficult walk, particularly on a hot day. Tee to green was fine but I feel I could have scored even higher had the greens had more roll on them. That aside, a nice course with a lot of blind shots and interesting holes.’
Facilities
Harwood offers a wide range of practice facilities at the club. There is a putting green, chipping area and 2 practice nets all next to each other by the car park. The putting green was in good condition and arguably ran quicker than the greens on the course. It was also long in length, so you weren’t in other people’s way. The chipping area needed a lot of work to it, but it did a job in terms of hitting a couple of balls before your round. It wasn’t a chipping area in which you could spend a long time practising on.
On the other side of the course behind the 17th tee was a 300-yard practice area. It looked like a pretty decent area to practice. The only negative is that it is a good walk down the 18th and over the road to get to the area. However, if you were planning to spend a bit of time there, then it would be ideal.
Hospitality
As it was a society day, we had pre planned breakfast beforehand in the clubhouse. The breakfast was of superb standard and the two ladies who worked there were very helpful. Whilst the clubhouse wasn’t the biggest, it was very suitable for hire events etc and they accommodated us perfectly throughout the morning.
The Pro Shop was very small in size. It was kitted out well and had all the golf essentials such as Tees, Balls etc as well as various clothing and a few clubs. Dale Affleck is the Head Pro at the course and whilst I didn’t see any coaching plans visible, I’m assuming that they are available at the course.
There was also a young girl working the shop who was very friendly and incredibly helpful during the day also.
Price
As part of the society deal, which was a full breakfast and a round of golf, the fee was £35. I’m not entirely sure how that was broken down, but I would say, while it wasn’t full value for money, it certainly represented a reasonable amount to charge for what we experienced.
Harwood offers a various number of memberships, which caters for all types of golfers and different circumstances golfers have outside of golf. Memberships vary for male and female and 5-, 6- and 7-day memberships, which start at £695 for male and £650 for females. This is about the standard price for memberships and would represent good value, especially if planning to play in competitions.
There are also other packages available for juniors, students and 19- to 35-year-olds too at some really good prices. One excellent package put together is the country packages, which is for players who live more than 50 miles away. They could pay from £360 and enjoy the full benefits of the membership available.
The amount of different memberships available is a good strategy from the club as there are a lot of options for the golfers to choose, which ensures that every member chooses the right package for them.
Experience
Harwood was a tough one to score. It had the essence of an excellent course. The course is very interesting and provides a number of stern tests for not just the average golfer but also low handicap golfers too. However, there were a number of things that just let it down slightly. The speed of the greens was a massive issue throughout the day and also a bigger, more spaced out golf shop would help it massively, especially with visitors.
The membership packages they have put together are a massive plus. I think the use of a junior academy and all the different practice facilities, mean the different packages available will attract more golfers than another club with less options.
Overall, I would still encourage golfers to check out the course. It’s not your straight forward, run of the mill course and it definitely gets you thinking strategically about your round.
Who This Course Is For
Final Verdict
Best for: Golfers who enjoy hilly, strategic courses with technical shot demands.
Also great for: Society days and first-time visitors who value clear hole signage and a friendly clubhouse.
Not ideal for: Anyone who hates slow greens or struggles with steep walks, especially in hot weather.
Harwood is an interesting, thinking golfer’s course with a solid layout and great variety, but the slow greens and small pro shop hold it back from being truly excellent. If you’re happy with a tough walk and don’t mind slower putting surfaces, it’s still well worth a visit and a good option for societies.
