Overall Experience
Golf Course
Playing off the Yellow tees, Birchwood played fairly short compared to some parkland courses. Due to the tees being forward a little, it made a lot of holes play quite short and the Par 5’s for big hitters, could be reached in two shots.
However what it lacked in yardage, it made up for in course management. Picking the right club off the tee was crucial as there were hazards in play on a lot of holes. Taking a driver on every hole wasn’t the right idea for a lot of players. The greens were small and undulating and protected by a number of bunkers which made approach shots tricky and again club choice was critical. Putting wasn’t straightforward due to a number of sloppy putts but the greens needed a cut and therefore pace was difficult to judge as they were fairly slow throughout the round.
Condition of the course was overall fairly good, the fairways were cut short and the tees was presentable despite a few patches, but that could have been due to the hot weather recently. The tees also had a picture of the hole, which is massively helpful if you had not played the course before.
Navigation around was quite tricky as the course is split into two sides either side of a main road. During the round you are required to cross the road four times. However, the course was well signposted directing you in the right direction.
A 14 handicapper – ‘ A course to be planned out for all types of golfer. It is certainly not just a big hitter’s course. The round was very pleasant, and the Pro Shop was incredibly friendly and helpful’.
Facilities
There was no driving range at the course, but there was a fairly large short game area, which included a bunker. There was also a big putting green, which was located right next to the first tee.
Hospitality
The Pro Shop was very friendly and helpful. It was very well stocked and provided a lot of brands in terms of clothing and shoes. The Pro behind the desk was incredibly friendly, calling us by our names and even suggested we could tee off early to play ahead of the club match that was about to take place. The shop also sold course guide books which are extremely helpful for first time players at the course. At £3.50 it was a must have for a first time player around the course.
Despite it being later in the evening the clubhouse was still open and was fully focused on the golfers. It was a nice open space for the golfers and again the staff was incredibly friendly.
Price
At £20 for a twilight round, It was a decent price for what me and my playing partner experienced and would consider playing again in the near future, especially in the summertime. I would imagine it could get quite wet in the winter with it being a parkland course.
There are several different categories for membership depending on age etc, however on the 18th green, there was a sign saying no joining fee required with whichever membership choice is made, which would be a big incentive for new members looking to join.
Experience
Birchwood was an overall success. The course was very challenging, especially for mid handicappers and it required a lot of plotting. Whilst the course condition wasn’t bad at all, there was room for improvement on the greens and in the bunkers. I would be very encouraged to play there again, and I would also recommend it to other golfers in the future. I would also say it was a perfect place for societies or any other golf days.
Who This Course Is For
Final Verdict
Best for: Mid-handicappers and golfers who enjoy plotting a parkland course rather than smashing driver everywhere.
Also great for: Societies and golf days, and first-time visitors who like clear hole signage and a helpful pro shop.
Not ideal for: Golfers who want fast greens and a driving range warm-up, or anyone who dislikes crossing a main road multiple times during the round.
Birchwood is a smart, course-management parkland track that offers excellent value at twilight pricing and a genuinely friendly welcome. The greens and bunkers could be sharper and the road-crossing layout is a quirk, but it’s a round I’d happily play again and recommend, especially for groups and societies.
